Sunday Worship Services

photograph by Steve Higginbotham photograph by Steve Higginbotham

Worship services, featuring meaningful sermons and outstanding music, are held each Sunday at 10:30 AM. Child care and religious education for children and youth are provided during the service, with nursery care starting at 10:20. SUUNDAE Forums are held before the service, except during summer. Please stay for coffee immediately following the service and join us for a potluck lunch on the first Sunday of each month. Visitors may want to attend Information Forums offered periodically to learn more about our church and about Unitarian Universalism

Sunday, January 29:  "The Parable of Ants"  Rev. Lone Broussard -   :    A Unitarian Universalist view of that most ancient and until recently very inclusive world religion that we call Hinduism.

Sunday, February 5:  - "What was the Reason for Sodom and Gomorrah?" - Rev. Lone Broussard - This story in the Hebrew bible has been used to justify oppression and prejudice. But what is it really about? As Unitarian Universalists we stand proudly on the side of Love. To counter the claims made by those who use ancient scripture as a weapon we would do well to know more about this story.

Sunday, February 12:  -"Many Faces of Love" - Love is an overused and sometimes much abused word. This Sunday we will celebrate it?s many facets and the joy it gives us. We will also have the great joy of welcoming children into our community with a child dedication service. And the choir will sing! It does not get much better than this!

Sunday, February 19: "Does God Play Dice with the Universe" - Dr. Don Marks - Einstein, Relativity and Relative Ethics.

Sunday, February 26: "What is Our Core" - Rev. Lone Broussard - This sermon was inspired by and is partly a response to my colleague Rev. Peter C Boullattas article: The Liberal Church Finding Its Mission: It is not About You. If you know someone who might be a UU at heart but does not yet know it this would be a good service to bring him or her to. You can find this article at: http://peterboullata.com/2011/12/29/the-liberal-church-finding-its-mission-its-not-about-you/"

Sunday, March 4 :  - "Beyond Dances with Wolves" - Earth Centered - Rev. Lone Broussard - What is Native American Spirituality

Sunday, March 11:  - "Reverence for Life" - Dr. Stefan Kertesz (UAB Medical School)- Stefan Kertesz, a medical doctor at UAB, spent time in training and (I think) also his residency in preventive medicine at the Albert Schweitzer Institute in West Africa. He suggested that Schweitzer's Nobel Prize in 1952, for the development of his philosophy. "Reverence for Life," shares some interesting parallels with Unitarianism, and he would like to talk about this as well as his leadership of our STP agency for that Sunday, One Roof SOAR. One Roof SOAR (Social Security Outreach, Access and Recovery).   "

The Second Sunday of each month, we Share the Plate.

What is a Family Room?

A note for parents about the "Family Room" (Formerly called the crying room.)  Here at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, we love our kids! And, we have to balance the natural inclinations of little ones who sometimes cry, or need to be with a parent, or want to run around, etc. with the needs of many of our older members and friends who have trouble hearing the service when there's a lot of background noise. So, to be respectful, if your little one is noisy or active, please sit near the back of the Sanctuary and slip out quietly to the Family Room where you can listen to the service while tending to your wee one in a freer space. The Family Room is located across the Narthex (the entranceway) in the Pickett Room. Thanks so much! Please contact Sharron Swain with any questions: dre @ uucbham dot org or 945-8109 or most Sunday mornings at the RE Welcome Table.

From the Worship Partners Committee

We welcome your thoughts and feelings about the worship services. Do you have ideas for Sunday services or would you like to be a service leader? Third Sundays, from 12:15 pm to 2:00 pm is the Worship Partners Committee meeting (in the Reading Room), open to all who are interested in coming and giving feedback or ideas for services. It is here that you can find out about becoming a Service Leader.
