Decorating Doin's

In Our Sanctuary

The June sanctuary art exhibit features acrylic and mixed media works by Fred Richards-Daishi.  To purchase, place checks, made out to Dr. Fred Richards, in the lectern at the rear of the sanctuary and notate your purchase on the price list.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the church.  Please note that this exhibit will hang for one month only.

The sanctuary art exhibit for July and August will feature works by artists of Second Studio.

This group of Birmingham artists have shared a studio and have supported and encouraged each other for 15 years.  They are Druscilla Defalque, Patricia M. Hershey, Dorothy G. Jones, Judith Taylor Rogers, Emily Hill Lalor, and Anita Ronderos.

They invite you and your friends to their opening reception on Sunday, July 18th, from 2-5 PM.

Minister's Office

The minister's office was cleaned and redecorated, under the expert guidance of Susan Markovitz, just in time for the first visit by a ministerial candidate. The congregation is invited to view the results of the hard work of Susan and the other members of the committee.

Room # 114

Downstairs, the committee has finally kicked into high gear the decorating of Room # 114 (the odd-shaped room across from the kitchenette). With proceeds from art sales, the committee purchased two tables and two arm chairs. These, along with the existing love seat and two donated chairs, will provide a comfortable area for meetings, casual get-togethers and quiet reading.

Special thanks to Kim Allen, who single-handedly repaired and painted the huge bookcases/cabinets that form the focal point for this furniture arrangement.

Thanks also to members of the Building & Grounds Committee, who moved the huge board table from the Volker Room into Room 114 to provide yet another area to hold business-type meetings.

We still need to hang pictures and purchase a rug and lamps to complete the project. Once it's done, we invite the congregation to use this new space.

Decorating Committee Policy Statement

as of August 14, 2006

Mission:

The Decorating Committee’s primary goal is to facilitate church programs while bringing harmony and unity to the physical spaces. It strives to assure the church is an attractive place for members and visitors to worship, socialize and work together.

Financial Contributions:

The Committee cheerfully accepts donations to accomplish its goals, in accordance with guidelines established by the Board of Trustees. A restricted account has been established to receive such funds. Acceptance of donations earmarked for specific projects must be approved by a majority of Committee members present at a duly called meeting.

Material Contributions:

The Committee must approve donations of items such as artwork, furniture, rugs and other decorative items. Materials accepted become the property of the UUCB and, as such, may be used, stored, sold or donated. Acceptance of material items does not obligate the UUCB to use or display the donation.

Committee Displays:

Decorating Committee members recognize the importance of graphic announcements in public areas of the building for various committees of the church to communicate their missions and facilitate their work. Our Committee is available to offer assistance regarding size, positioning, appearance, etc. of such displays. Committees are urged to keep information on displays up to date. The Decorating Committee may, at its discretion, remove outdated announcements and displays. Such materials will be returned to the appropriate group when possible.

Justice Committee Donations:

The Justice Committee maintains a table adjacent to the main entrance of the building narthex, which serves as a convenient location for donations of goods for local charitable agencies. This community outreach work is important to the UUCB. The Decorating Committee has provided attractive containers to hold the donations. If the containers are full, donors are asked to notify a member of the Justice Committee and/or place bagged and labeled donations in one of the closets adjacent to the narthex.

Church Displays:

The Decorating Committee must approve, in advance, displays of personal items such as photographs, hobbies, artwork, etc. Such approvals will be for a specified period of time and restricted to a specific area of the building. The Committee urges members and friends to use good judgment in the display of church-related photographs, memorabilia, posters, etc., to assure that displays do not interfere with traffic flow within the building and that they are removed in a timely manner, usually no more than two weeks.

Maintenance:

The Decorating Committee strives to maintain order throughout the church with monthly "sweeps," during which its members inspect the entire facility for outdated and out-of-place material. It also notifies the appropriate staff, committee chair and/or cleaning service of problems detected.

Religious Education Space:

The RE staff and Committee are primarily responsible for decorating space used for its activities and classes, with the exception of space used for all-church meetings and/or classes (currently the Volker Room and Room # 114). The Decorating Committee will continue to be responsible for these areas.

Consulting:

The Decorating Committee is "willing and able" to serve as a resource for any church group or committee seeking advice or expertise on decorating issues.

Recycling Project:

By now you probably have all noticed the new recycling bins located in the hallways of UUCB. What you may not have noticed is that one of the bins is labeled “Electronics” where you can recycle old cell phones and used ink cartridges. Not only will these cell phones and ink cartridges be kept out of landfills, but the RE program is collecting these items as a fundraiser through Funding Factory. The more items we collect, the more money we raise for RE, so please look around your homes and places of business, and see if you can help both RE and the environment.
