A Word from...

Rev. Barry Whittemore

If you are reading this electronically, I hope to see you Sunday at your congregation's Annual Meeting.  If you are reading this in print, then wasn't that an interesting and instructive meeting on the 31st?  With changes in Board leadership, the election of a Ministerial Search Committee, and the approval of a highly unusual budget, UUCB launches itself down an interesting road.

At this juncture I cannot help but think about both the joys and foibles of democracy.  Both theologically and politically, there is nothing finer to me than to see the will of an informed people rise to the surface and take shape.  There is, however, nothing more disappointing than to see inaction lead to truncated processes inadequate decisions.  Thus, I urge every member to be deeply involved, not just this Sunday, but for the at least the next full year.  The decisions made during that time will effect the congregation for many years to come.

As Unitarian Universalists, we regularly proclaim the inherent worth and dignity of every person as well as the democratic process.  Politically most of us are passionate about "one man, one vote" and often decry the influence of special interest groups in our civil government.  One of the public roles we ought to be playing is the modeling of responsive and responsible governing in our congregation.  This only happens with widespread and deep involvement.  Blessings on those of you who stick to it.

Once June 1st gets here, I'll be gone for a week.  I will try to rectify personal deficits in familial contact, sleep, mountain air, and old time music.  Upon return, I will be with you for a five Sunday run. I am looking forward to all of it.

See you in Church,

Barry
