Social Activities

The Social Activities Committee's mission is to plan and organize a variety of quality social activities, including intergenerational activities, to strengthen our ties as a church community, and to foster friendships and emotional support among members and friends of the congregation, with special invitations to newcomers.

Contact Cathy Taylor for more information regarding social activities, including:

Upcoming Events

First Sunday Lunch

On the first Sunday of each month (unless otherwise announced) we sit down to a potluck lunch after the service. First-time visitors are our special guests. The rest of us bring a dish to share (or pay a few dollars, but we prefer that you bring food). Please join us and please sign up to help the kitchen committee, which sponsors this event, to clean up afterward.

Movie Night

Here's how it works--the host provides beverages, and the other participants bring heavy hors d'oeuvres (supper type food).   The host will let us know ahead of time which movie he or she is planning to show; take suggestions from participants; or have several movies on hand to offer.  These evenings are lots of fun, and give us an opportunity to get to know each other better.

If  you have a television set, can accommodate 6 to 8 (or more) people and would like to host, please let Cathy Taylor know, chair.social.

Cottage Suppers!

Cottage Suppers are a great opportunity for members/friends (especially new ones!) to get to know more fine folks in our congregation.

Here's the way it works. You will sign up at the host home you wish to attend. The host provides hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and attendees bring the rest of the meal. When your host calls you, ask what you may bring. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. This is a great way to get to know others in our congregation, and to share a delicious meal. We especially want to invite newcomers and visitors.

Need more info? Contact Cathy Taylor.

Game Night Gatherings

Could you host a small gathering on a night of your choice? We are looking for folks to invite a few fellow UU's, maybe 4 to 8 people for a spot of bridge, backgammon, cribbage, rummy, charades, etc. No elaborate chores for the host. Toss out a bag
of popcorn, cookies or whatever and indulge in leisurely merriment. Communicate your willingness to Cathy or Bob Taylor.

Hiking

Hikers! If you're interested in a hiking group, please sign up in the
Social Activities Notebook again. The original sign-up sheet was misplaced. For further information, please contact Susan Putnam.

Ladies' Night Out:

Women, are you looking for a way to socialize with other UUs, but just can't find the time to organize something?  Well the Spiritual and Ethical Enrichment Committee has done the organizing for you.   All women are invited to get together for dinner and girl talk on the second Wednesday. Child care will be provided from 6:30 until 8:30 at the church.  Please meet at 6:30 , and after the kids are settled in, we will carpool to a nearby restaurant.   To make sure we have adequate childcare, please sign up in the Social Activities notebook located on the back table of the sanctuary or RSVP to childcare coordinator Melissa Hamley, child.care.

Men, we aren't trying to keep you from having your own fun, so feel free to meet up at the church at 6:30 too and head off to a restaurant of your own choice.

Other Social Events

Past outings have included trips to the Anniston Museum of Natural History, the Warner-Westervelt Art Museum in Tuscaloosa, Barons Baseball games, the Cahaba Lily Festival and theater outings for plays at Terrific New Theater, Birmingham Festival Theater, Virginia Samford Theater and the Jewish Community Center plays.

If you have questions about any of these, contact Cathy Taylor, chair.social (or chair.seec for Woo-Hoo Wednesday).  Let's go together and share the fun!

Watch the calendar for details.
